critiques

I teach high school. When I do a critique, I first ask the students to look
at the work and answer the following 2 questions in writing:

1. What I really like about this piece is... ( be as descriptive as
possible and state WHY)

2. If I could work on one part of this work to make it better it would
be... ( once again, be descriptive and state why).

The next step is to share the written reflections orally. This way EVERYONE
has something they can contribute. All too often in a critique, too many
are afraid to speak, especially in the beginning. Sometimes I have paired
students together and asked them to do this for each other. Then they share
their writing just between the 2 of them. They finds this personal, more
intimate critique to be very helpful. I am interested in how other high
school teachers encourage participation.
