active learning

What do you all consider active learning in the studio art classroom? By my
definition, simply working on a studio project does not work...It seems more
to me that research in groups or pairs before a project is cooperative. So
would be constructivist or inquiry type lessons where the student is given a
problem to figure out. Any ideas would be appreciated...
