I second the idea of calling home. Last year I had some kids, who
refused to read our novel, and were calling me all sorts of names. Then
they brought in forged notes excusing them from reading the novel. I
called the parents explained that we were reading Devil's Arithmetic
from the 5th grade novel list in part as a response to the racists
remarks from their daughters. (Devil's Arithmetic is about the
Holocaust) All four students were grounded for disrupting my class. One
mother did tell me that her daughter could not make racists remarks,
because she is African American.
Sincerely,
Kimberly Herbert

Hi Mary,
Calling home is a good thought, but I'll have to use the language line,
as I
don't speak Portuguese. Many times our kids ( we have a global school,
with
mostly new immigrants) have to write their own notes and have their
parents
sign them. I often wonder what they are told they are signing.
My other thought is that they belong to some sort of fundamentalist
and
strict sect.
