Well, I told a small group of students who stayed after school today that I
wanted to discuss this in small groups on Friday. They said that they think
it would be a good (and heated) debate. So, what I'm going to do is do a
small 5 minute small group discussion "Restore or remember?" tomorrow where
they read the article, take a stance, and discuss reasons for and against in
their small groups. Then, Monday I think I'm actually going to assign to a
certain side that they have to debate. I remember having to debate issues
in college even though I disagreed with it.
I know my husband and I are (friendly) arguing about the WTC issue right
now. He says it's not original if it's restored. In my opinion, that would
mean just let the Last Supper and Sistine Chapel rot which I think is
absurb. Of course, he's still arguing that they shouldn't have moved the
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse because it was unnatural to move it. "Just let it
go down with the tides." What a waste!
The WTC tragedy and its connections to art seem so natural for my students
to discuss but when we pull out art reproductions (for my entry 3 NBPTS)
they seem to get stale and just answer the questions without initiate any
discussion themselves. I'm going to videotape it just in case I could use
it for NB. I feel like NB is looking for discussion about artworks rather
than the issues surrounding them. I'll have to reread the darn entry to
find out if this is appropriate. What do you guys think? Michelle Harrell
