I clipped out the photo of the proposed sculpture along with the
local news article that reported the event rather factually.
It is interesting to me that this discussion has even surfaced. I was
surprised that this has become an issue.
Some grade 11's felt the sculpture should have remained true to the
photo because it portrayed whites. I took a more global perspective
and suggested that the tragedy occurred not just to individuals at
the scene but to all North Americans - who are not just white. I
tried to show the students that the photo itself has become
controversial because it mimics the famous flag raising photo at Iwo
Jima.
I think a great question could be developed on this topic for my June art exam.
