Besides what Leah talked about you might want to direct their attention to
carry colors across the painting so their color choices won't be so
arbitrary. Get colbalt blue in the sky and somewhere else also. Warm up
colors with burnt sienna or cool them down with prussian blue. Use Ivory
black and Zinc White for portraits because they are warmer and kinder on the
face. Titanium white is a good coverall, but cold. Some paints are very
tough to work with such as Prussian Blue and Veridian because you need ooh so
little to change a color.
