Special GLEF Blast, January 8, 2002
Schools for the Year 2050

In spring 2001, in Mountlake Terrace, Washington, a challenge was put
forth
by Mountlake Terrace High School math teacher Eeva Reeder to her 9th and
10th grade classes:

"Working as a member of an architectural team in the year 2050, you are
competing against five other companies to win the contract to design a
state-of-the-art high school on a given site. You must present your
proposed design to a panel of professional architects who will be
awarding
the contract."

Over a period of six weeks, nine teams of 9th and 10th graders let their
imaginations soar and applied their real-world mathematical knowledge to
building scale models, drafting site plans, and making cost estimates.
The
nine design teams presented their state-of-the-art school designs,
plans,
and budgets to Seattle architects. The design that was judged best with
regard to concept, use of the site's features, building and classroom
design, and cost would win the competition.

A GLEF video crew was on hand, and now you can enter Eeva Reeder's
classroom, watch the final presentations, and cast your vote!

This group opted to create spaces encouraging small learning communities
to
give students a feeling of security. The academic buildings include
circular, all-glass classrooms and a central hub with areas for studying
and/or socializing. A special feature is a transportation system
simulating
a roller-coaster.

Recognizing that there are different learning types and styles, this
team
designed its school with flexible spaces encouraging individual and
group
learning with lots of room for project work. Fewer classes lasting twice
as
long as normal classes promote one-on-one time with teachers and
students.
Two large geodesic domes are the centerpiece of the design and help
reduce
costs for heating and cooling.

An open environment to encourage open minds, this school includes glass
walls and/or ceilings in many of the individual buildings. Each
classroom
accommodates nine groups, or "pods" of eight students who work with the
assistance of a holographic "teacher" and two adult supervisors. A
circular, elevated library provides "work and learning spaces for people
who prefer different atmospheres and/or learning techniques."

II. Instructions and Guidelines (PDF documents)

"The ability to work collaboratively is a learned skill. Students need
repeated opportunities to practice it within a complex, high-stakes
context
-- similar to what they'll encounter in the community and workplace as
adults," -- Eeva Reeder, a former math teacher at Mountlake Terrace High
School in Washington state until Summer 2001.

Download instructions and guidelines to use in shaping a Schools for the
Year 2050 project in your classroom. If your interest in project-based
learning is just beginning, you may want to start with simpler projects.
Viewing Reeder's instructions and guidelines will give you ideas for
approaching various aspects of collaborative projects.

The George Lucas Educational Foundation (GLEF) is a nonprofit operating
foundation located in the San Francisco Bay Area. Established in 1991 by
filmmaker George Lucas, the Foundation produces and distributes
materials
sharing hundreds of powerful examples of learning and teaching already
successful in our nation's schools. We hope this information will
stimulate
active involvement and guide choices in school reform.
