I think the story you are thinking is about Pope Paul's secretary =
(or Master of Ceremonies as he's called in The Agony and the Ecstasy) - =
Biagio da Cesena. I think Savonarola was long gone by this point ? =
Anyway, it was about the naked bodies and this sect'y made lots of =
complaints to everyone and the Pope, said it was immoral, etc., etc, So =
Michelangelo painted him with the ears of a donkey and a snake wrapped =
around his body as one of the figures in Hell - a very unflattering =
portrait, but very recognizable. Biagio brough the Pope back to see the =
latest digrace and demanded he make Michelangelo take him out. The Pope =
supposedly said something like " I can get you out of prugatory, but =
over Hell, I have no power." True story?
Dusting through the ancient cobwebs in my antique brain, I seem =
remember a
story about Michelangelo's Last Judgment. After being hassled about =
the
painting (about what? naked bodies??) by someone (Clement VII? or
Savonarola?), Michelangelo painted his adversary's face on one of =
the
images in hell.
Can anyone fill in the details of this story?
Christa
