I am just finishing paper mache figures with 4th and 5th graders. We taped
together straws for the armature, then used torn newspaper strips and flour
and water paste. They were to put on at least two layers of newspaper and
then two layers of plain newsprint. They are painting them with acrylics
and adding yarn for hair. One girl used fabric scraps to make a skirt with
ribbon sash that co-ordinates with the a painted on blouse. We are cutting
down water bottles to make chair forms that student are also layering with
paper mache and painting. Other students are using scraps of foam core to
make surf boards etc,
These are about the size of a Barbie doll and might be too small and detailed
for 3 rd graders. I have rolled and taped newspapers together for an armature
in the past. This will make a larger form.
