Giving challenging 'problems' to solve in clay works well for me.
Last 2 assignments I gave to 2nd year students: Using coil method create a
10" to 12" container; coils also had to be part of the surface design. Since
I did not specify height or width...I got some high and some wide. One
student made 2, 5" containers. Some used minimal coil for design (especially
those who wanted to burnish), others used alot. 2nd problem: create a
container that is "fastened in some way." They were allowed to use any
handbuilding method. Some did the usual...bows, buttons, string (made out of
clay), one added a mega sized saftey pin after the firing was complete. We
had great results. Our next project will be drape mold....the artist's plate.
Hope that helps!
