Going to London . . .
Try and fit in a visit to Shakespeare's Globe Theatre on the south bank.
It's a wonderful re-creation of the original Globe. They do a good tour
and if you are there in the season (plays are in the summer as it is open
to the elements), you can get a "groundling" ticket for 5 pounds ($7.50).
As someone who grew up close to Stratford and the Royal Shakespeare Company
this beats the RSC hands down.
I caught up with this conversation thread late and don't know if anyone
mentioned the Tate Gallery in Pimlico. I heard they are planning to expand
it further and open a new location in a power plant on the other side of
the river but I don't know if that's done yet. It's known for it's Turner
collection but there's plenty more to keep you busy. Also, museum
restaurants are usually good value for meals. The National Portrait
Gallery is of interest which is round the corner from the National Gallery
on Trafalga Square. If you go to the National Gallery, take a look at the
building itself from the outside. On the left hand side is the Sainsbury
addition. Sainsbury is a supermarket magnet and there's been a lot of
criticism of the architecture. (Can you tell I used to be a tour director!)
Finally, this is not a traditional exhibition space but Harrod's food hall
has wonderful ceramics, floor to ceiling, plus lots of general color and
liveliness.
