I've done Haiku and watercolor with fifth grade. a matter of fact...a few
years ago I did the Halmark Mothers' Day Card contest and I do believe one of
my fifth grade students won nationally (out of 42000 entries, they say)
becuase of the creative difference....I taught haiku, then talked about what
a mother means and how we can connect it to nature...then I taught Japaneese
pen and ink...showed examples,,,,allowed the students to practice with very
tiny brushes. When they created a nature scene which expressed their peotry
about mom, we watercolored them.......sent them in and won!!!!!!!!!!!!!!This
project is a winner!!!!!great for placemats for Mother's Day, too. find a
resurant in the community that will use them.........great community project,
too. I am rambling...but I get sooo excited every time I remember that
winning card. Published and sold with my student's name and our school on
the back...nationally!
