I teach 2nd through 12th and have 7th on a nine week wheel..
I always begin with the Elements and Principles of Design.
The first project is with "Line".
We fold a 12X12 sheet of drawing paper in quarters and open it and fold it on
both diagonals. So it's folded in a cross and an "X". Then...We do a class
game on "Different Kinds of Lines' , (on a separate sheet of paper) and the
table with the biggest list "wins". We discuss our lists and then I discuss
Radial Design.
Using the folded paper ,I ask them to plan a radial design using Geometric
shapes
with their pencil. Each 1/4 of the paper is a mirror image of the one next to
it.
The design must radiate from the center of the paper.
Now we use our Line ideas to design our Radial pattern.
Black and white designs with a high degree of contrast.Sharpie markers are
great.
They ALWAYS love the final product and are very proud of their work.
Each Element and Principle has an assignment.
When I start my year this way I build a solid base to grow from and the studen
ts can discuss their work intellegently.
We also keep the "Elements and Principles" posted so we can use the vocabulary
in critique and discussions.
Having an understanding of these is essential for the upper level art courses.
Hope this was a help. Have fun....7th is always enthusiatic for me.
