hello to all,
this conversation has captured my attention. the big movement in education
right now is mapping and art is the one class that can cut across all
subject boundaries. i went to an inservice last summer that featured a
school in oregon (i think, northwest for sure) where they only went to
school 4 days a week (tues-fri), monday was reserved for entire faculty
meeting on the educational plan for the week. they would start with a
subject (doesn't really matter which) and each subject would have to show
how they could relate to that in their class. it was amazing to see how it
could work. maybe we need to get away from the idea of a "curriculum" and
educate the children to see how the world relates to itself and everything
else. i remember a show that used to come on our public tv station, called
The day the world changed. it was so fascinating because while you learned
what was going on in one place you saw what was happening on the other side
of the world and how ultimately due to time, cultures or just plain humanity
it was all interelated! i believe that we could set these young people on
fire if they could just see that we're all in it together.
just a thought!!
