i must be quite mistaken about teachers saleries accross the nation.
i am making $19,500. i am a half time teacher. i have 9 years full time
    experience and 52 graduate credits.
our high end step is 54k. i mentioned that i am in rural upstate new york.
average house in our town is 70k taxes are high but rents are low. apartment
for $450. or a house for $600. cost of living is quite low here but so is
access to anything. an hour to a mall or museum or decent restaurant.
my shock here is that i thought we were average saleries. rochester new
york, i have read, has saleries in the $70's.

don't forget new york's tuition for higher education and required masters
degree! most teachers (that don't have rich parents) walk out of their
university with a diploma and a $50.000 loan.
