ok, I have been holding off telling you all my salary, because quite frankly
I didn't want to kill you all...but here it goes. I have 2 certificates, 1
masters + 30 credits, have taugh 24 years, and make $80,000 as a base salary
with the big whoop of an additional $3,000 stipend to to the yearbook. oh
and it's a public school, too. I work from 7:15 am until 7:00 at night, and
with deadlines, until 11:00 at night, no weekends. And like all of you, I
am not in it for the money, but over the years, our union has been very
tough in the negotiation room....beginners' start at $35,000, and since the
faculty is mostly Baby Boomers, our Board of Education is salivating at the
opportunity to hire new teachers as we retire. I remember when I first
started I made $8,000 a year. The key for us has been that we let the "men"
negotiate for us, as they were the ones who had to work 3 jobs to support
their families early on, and we definitely NOT amused by that. We found
that when we had 'women' in the negotiating room, they compromised a lot
sooner, while the "men" took no prisoners! I know it sounds sexist, but that
has been our union history and it worked!
