From someone who has been working with glazes for a long time, I can honestly
say that often times the out come after a firing is a still a mystery
especially when using overglazes. So with middle school students i have found
that a full range of underglaze colors seems to satisfy even the pickiest of
students and so I made a chart of fired colors using 1 to 2 coats of a color
with 2 coats of clear transparent overglaze. I also made sample tiles of
different glazing techniques: sponging, stenciling, resist, etc., and then
one showing the use of Axner glazes that create exfine, fine, and medium
lines for writing, etc. I put these sample tiles near the glazing area and it
allows the students to see the fired colors and identify the bottles by name.
Save a lot of time for me to constantly having to describe the colors of the
glazes,etc.
