I often combine writing asignments with art in order to help students
prepare for their state writes upon request tests. Students have enjoyed
them and I am always surprised at their creativity.
I display four to five prints (I've used Christina's world, The Scout, Boy
with a Tire, etc). I give students a sheet which explains their choices,
as well as give instructions. Students can select a point of view and
write their paper. Their choices are; 1) You are a person in the print
and you are writing an entry in your daily journal, blah, blah, blah 2)
You are a newspaper reporter and you must write an artical about the event
3) The picture is going to be used in a television campaign (nonsmoking,
mental health. etc). Write a paragraph that will be read while the picture
is on the television screen. This would be a persuasive paper/pargraph.
If you give them an exemplar by modeling (reading previous student writings
or have the class work on one as a class), you will be surprised at the
results. I used to just have them write sloppy copies and that was it.
Now I have them write a sloppy copy and the next day have them rewrite. I
was blown away at the improvement students made at the second go. I do not
count off for grammer or spelling, but the rewrite gave them time to think.
Most were more detailed and the events flowed more smoothly.
