    Possibilities are endless
    K-5
    • 3-5 Try having kids describe an art process step by step in paragraph
form - really calls on their thinking skills and will show you what they
know and if they understand the process. Display these with the art
    work.
•K-3 Collaborative class Big Books - help kids write story. Type up the
story, divide kids into groups and give each group a paragraph or
    sentence; have them create the illustrations to go with the words;
compile all pages into a book.
•kindergarten Take dictation from children as their work is in progress(
I usually write what they say at the top or bottom of the page - this
really encourages them to want to read)
•K-2 Create simple books with each child doing a page; you put it
together as they finish and send it to the classroom.
I did this in Dec. and had each kid finish this sentence: "The best
thing about my teacher is......" We finished them, wrapped them and
gave them to their classroom teachers for holiday gifts.
•Simple poetry - give them a frame in which to write it
•Research the picture books in your media center for ideas
•Simple poetry using descriptive words about their own work
Example: Have kids create a work of art with an animal as the theme.
On a separate piece of paper, have them write the name of the animal as
the title of the poem. First line would be two words that describe the
animal, second line would be 3 words telling what the animal is doing,
4th line would be a sentence telling where the animal is. It helps to
brainstorm descriptive words before the writing and write them on the
chalk board. There are many variations on this.
    Make it fun
Example: My second grade students have created in bas relief with Model
Magic® dinosaur pictures showing habitat.. These were painted and now
they have redrawn the dinosaurs they created on large paper and are
going to paint them also. All the while they have been told to be
thinking of a story they could write about the dinosaurs they created.
The three creations will be displayed together. They are quite excited
about this project and their work is wonderful. Can't wait to hear the
    stories.
