Last year a household in our community held a garage sale. Little did I
know that the old women who once lived there before moving out west, was an
accomplished rughooker. Her son returned home to conduct the sale, as she
had already moved, I believe to a nursing home near her family in another
state. When the sale was over there were a stack of things which were
discarded at the curb. Among them was an old photo album which must hold
more than one-hundred color photographs of rugs which she and her friends,
students and co-rughookers must have made. Absolutely astonishing! I
couldn't bring myself to leave the album there and so took it with me.
Eventually I brought it to my classroom. Your discussion has rekindled my
interest in this album, and perhaps I can make small rugs with my
k-2ngraders, using the photographs as motivation!
I wonder if there are copywright laws which would restrict me from
publishing the photographs in a book about hooked rugs? Unfortunately,
there are no notations on the photographs as to who are the owners or
designers/makers of the rugs. Any experience with something like this?
