Hi BluesTruth! I lead an architecture Omnibus session for fourth graders
every year and the very first Architect that we look at is Frank Lloyd
Wright. The book Frank Lloyd Wright, America's Master Architect by Kathryn
Smith has fabulous photos of some of his work. I got a great little book at
the library about all of the trials and tribulations of his great works and
I'm sorry but I don't recall the name of it. It told of all of the
catastrophes that Wright experienced and I related the stories to the
students just to point out that 1. Even great Architects make mistakes. 2.
Using your imagination is a powerful thing. 3. Never be afraid to fail. I
spend a good deal of the time talking about Falling Water because I know that
it would be easily recognizable to the students. As a project to get them
thinking, we then design "COOL SCHOOL". I allow the students to each give
one idea during the programming process. Ideas range from slides in the
lunchroom to basketball hoops in the hall and then I always add the last bit
of information-we must have a rollercoaster to get around. The students then
draw their interpretation of the ideas we have programmed on architectural
graph paper. (Available at any art or drafting supply store) Finally, they
must present their plan to their peers and answer questions. The students
are always so excited that they hang their finished products in the hall for
all to see. For the remaining weeks we look at other Architect and their
work and finally we take the Architectural tour of the Weisman Museum on the
University of Minnesota Campus. You can receive a packet of information of
the Architectural Information "What Buildings Say and How They Say It" plus
slides by calling 612-625-9623 and visit them on the web www.weisman.umn.edu
Click on Building Surprises for an interactive exploration of the
architecture of the Weisman Art Museum for kids, families and schools. Hope
this Helps!!! Good luck!
