Know this is short notice, but maybe some of you need a lesson idea for
tomorrow, 1/21. On the list of birthdays for Jan. which Bunky recently sent
out, there was no artist for 1/21. I happen to know that the New Realist
Painter, Kim Mendenhall's birthday is Jan. 21st. Her work is shown at the
Louis K. Meisel Gallery In NYC. There is a thumbnail visual of one of her
paintings on their web site: WWW.Meiselgallery.com
Kim grew up in Long Island, and currently lives in California. I believe
the gallery defines her work as second generation new realism. Her husband
is the painter, Jack Mendenhall. He is a first generation new realist. His
work is shown at the O.K. Harris Gallery in NYC. I don't think the gallery
has him on their site, but I haven't recently checked.
Possible lesson ideas: Realism vs. abstraction
Still life - Composition
California light effects tones/values
Contemporary women in the arts
Husband and wife, Painters in the Mendenhall studio
West Coast - East Coast Connections
or, if you can't get visuals in time or if no
access to computer website, Just a little birthday talk about women making
it in the arts, which unfortunately is still a struggle with less
enlightened galleries.
Best wishes, Mselle
