I teach 7-8th grader ART I repousse masking. We've used both newspaper and
magazines and I prefer the magazines simply because of the thickness. We've
also tried many types of tools but found the best for us was a simple
elementary-sized pencil (thick lead, thick pencil) for the best results. We
use 36-gauge metal...still cutable on the papercutter...and cut the shapes
with scissors. The 36-gauge metal is still workable with the hands but
firmer and holds the shape better than 38-gauge...less frustration. It also
holds it's shape better when doing counter-repousse. I haven't had any hands
cut with the metal yet. Hold-punchers work nicely for adding ribbon, beads,
feathers, etc.
We begin with newsprint drawings transferred with the pencil onto the metal.
We use perm. colored sharpies for coloring. We display these on stands.
Toodles.......
