To activate the light meter, you must depresst the shutter button
half way. The needle will move to the F-stop shown on the right side
of the viewfinder. Change the shutter speed or f-stop to get the
needle in the middle range. The camera has two batteries. The small
dime shaped one in the bottom for the light meter and the larger 6v .
one in the front of the camera body which operates the shutter and
film advance. Batteries my be low or dead in your student's camera.

My Canon AE-1 also has a fully automatic feature at the bottom of the
    f-stops in the view finder.

You probably could find a manual from Canon or try e-Bay or some
    other on-line auction.
