Hi! It sounds like you are describing one of my 3rd grade classes this year!
I tried working with the classroom teacher the whole first semester and
things just kept getting increasingly worse. So the day I got back with them
in January, I told them all in a quiet voice that I knew there were a lot of
great kids in the class and a lot of artistic talent, but because of the
negative behavior I couldn't spend any time with any of them all fall. Then
I told them that my new years resolution was to focus on the kids who came to
work and listen and that I'd keep a chart of good days for individual kids.
When anyone got three checks on this chart, they would get a small prize, but
that more importantly they would be able to make better art. Anyway we
started it right away and the kids who had been slipping pulled themselves
back together and only 3 kids rather than 1/2 the kids misbehaved
(inappropriate talk and just plain meanness). I don't think a community
project (although I love doing collaborative stuff with kids) will work for
this group and in fact, I've scrapped some of my favorite projects for 3rd
grade with this group.
Good luck.
Julie
