    Hello Arnet Friends,
Many of you have already sent some great advice. Thanks! I am
compiling them and will put them to use real soon. Here is an update. Today
I went by the school after my college class. It was right when the high
school was letting out for the day. I met the teacher I will student teach
for. He is very nice, a teacher of 20 plus years, but his first year at this
(public) school. He was at a cushy private school for the 20 plus years. It
has been a real shock for him. Here goes: The school does not really support
the arts. All he had was a shell of a room, tables and chairs plus a small
amount of art supplies. He started out the year with typing paper only for
the students to draw on. Fast forward, but just know he had nothing to start
    with.
Discipline is kinda a problem too. Many of the kids don't care, but the main
problem is they sabotage what little art supplies the room has, such as
jabbing a hole in the glue bottles, missing paintbrushes and missing tools
for scratch art. The other BIG problem he has is a WALL that divides the big
room and this is where the kids go (on either side) out of site of the
teacher and do their misbehaving. I suggested he put up mirrors or baby
    monitors.
Now the good part. I was there for 2 hours (can you believe he stayed
until 5:00 to talk) I listened to him and even better, I tried to give him
some suggestions and solutions for these problems. He loved the ideas, but I
told him I could not take credit. I am on this really neat art teacher ring
and they talk about this stuff all the time. He said he is at a low point
right now and welcomed my excitement. However, I was a little deflated when
I left (I did not let him see that.) I asked about the community (I live 2
miles from the school) and he says they have very little support. Come to
find out they don't ask for anything. There is also no school spirit. Sorry
so long. I will keep yall up on the situation. The good thing is he said I
can do whatever I want when it comes time for me to teach alone. They are
doing contrasting color now along with Egyptian Sarcophagus. Soon they will
move to space and texture. That is what they have left of the elements. He
said it is like starting from scratch with these kids. It takes awhile to
get a program going. Thanks for listening.
     I love yall.
    Janice
