One of the critical factors in art education for children is the concept of
the students development. Scribbling is not unusual as it is an indicator of
the child's present level of development. They do not think like adults
think, they do not perceive the way adults perceive. I urge you to read about
this in Victor Lowenfeld's "Creative and Mental Growth". This is a serious
and well studied situation for art educators, and, as you suggest, the
problem lies with your method not your intent.
