Dear Sandy,
I know how you feel. I teach k-5 at two schools and just got back into
teaching art after teaching pre-school and being a program director for
almost 20 years. I had a lot to relearn. I helped me to meet with other art
teachers and use their ideas and jump from there. I also plug into what the
students are doing in their classroom and get theme ideas there. This is my
third year back, and I feel pretty good about what I'm doing. Read a lot and
don't be afraid to fail. I had one paper mache' project that ended in the
dumpster. It helped the students understand though that not all art projects
turn out perfect and that art is not an exact science. Learn from your
mistakes and don't be afraid to let the kids lead sometimes. Good luck.
