My students love doing the Vortex project. On a poster board, select a
spot for the point - I encourage something off center, not too close to the
edge for first timers. Next, use a yard stick (metal) and lightly draw
lines through the point from one edge of the paper to another edge in wheel
spoke manner. This results in the page being broken into wedges. Next,
draw horizontal lines from the bottom of the page, working your way up the
page using the width of the yard stick...or measurements of an inch or so.
The first Optical illusion occurs in that the lines seem to bend closest
to the point.
Students select a wedge and paint a space in the selected color. Within
the same wedge an alternate color is painted in the next space. The
student continues by alternating colors until he/she reaches the smallest
space at the point. The next wedge is selected and the alternate color is
painted in the shape next to the first shape painted so that the same color
touches only at the corner of the shapes.
A double vortex is cool too! and requires more observation skill. Insert a
bubble letter name (no overlapping of the letters) for some cool results.
I had a senior who focused on doing the Warner Bros. Cartoon Characters -
and that was mind splitting! It required a lot of editing too as he had to
be careful of the line placement in developing the characters.

I am thinking about doing an op art project next semester as a part of
my line unit. Are there any ideas out there? I remember seeing a project
done using convex and concave lines, but I have no idea how it was done.
Thanks in advance! :)
