Dear Sandy,
Although I am still a rookie and really don't have much room to talk, I
often remember something I read during college. Teaching is just like any
other job. You go to work; you work; you come home. (I realize that there is
much more to it.) In any case, the words that stuck out the most related to
the afterschool planning. The author said to leave school at a decent hour.
Don't stay late. He also said never do more than an hour's worth of work at
home. It takes away your life. He is right. My dad came (and still does)
home late at night and brings home at least three hours of work with him.
(Not a real fun atmosphere growing up)
To combat this problem (excessive work), I plan a couple weeks in
advance for projects, making sure I have materials ready and so forth. When
I get overwhelmed with work, I try to remember what I read. This reminds me
to walk away and spend some time the way I want to. Work will always be
there when I come back. I hope this helps.
