HIGH SCHOOL ART GRADES INCLUDED IN GPA FOR ADMISSIONS CONSIDERATION
    AT
    BUFFALO STATE COLLEGE

ď NAEA Members Michael Parks and John Siskar Lead Admissions Policy
    Change
    for Art Education

BUFFALO, NY. ó High school arts grades are now calculated into a
    candidate's
overall high school grade point averages (GPA) for admissions
    consideration
at Buffalo State College (BSC) in Buffalo, New York. The college arts
    faculty
had long-assumed that arts grades were included for several reasons:
    1) one
unit of credit in the arts has been required for high school
    graduation in
New York state since 1985; 2) art education has played an important
    role in
the history of the college; 3) visual arts programs at BSC are the
    largest
and most comprehensive in the State University system; and 4) Buffalo
    State
College is the only institution in the SUNY system that requires all
    students
on campus to complete a minimum of three courses in the arts for
    graduation.

Faculty assumptions, however, were questioned on May 12, 1998, when
    NAEA
    sent
the Art Education Department an informal admissions survey, inquiring
    if
general admissions requirements for the college included applicants'
    high
school art grades in the calculation of their overall grade point
    average.
John Siskar, a member of the art education faculty, contacted the
    college
admissions office to inquire about the GPA policy. To their dismay,
    the
faculty learned that studentsí arts grades were not included in the
    overall
GPA. Art Education Department Chair, Michael Parks, raised the issue
    with
the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Dennis McCarthy, and
    with
    the
chairs of the faculty departments. With a unified voice they met with
    the
retiring Director of Admissions, Paul Collyer to solicit his
    advisement and
support. Support continued for the changes and on October 20th, 1999,
    the
new Director of Admissions informed the Dean and chairs of the faculty
    that
high school arts grades are now included in the overall GPA's of all
applicants under consideration for admission to Buffalo State College.
