I have done similar projects with students at the high school level. I've
started by sharing the symbolism & iconography of traditional heraldry with
the students. I have also made some picture books on symbols available to
the students so that I don't get so many hearts, peace signs and yin yang
symbols. There is a rich tradition of symbols out there waiting to be
mined, many of which are unknown to students. They loved it once they
found out there were traditional images that they could use, and they soon
began to make new associations instead of repeating the same old stuff.
Some students began by finding their "real" family coat of arms &
researching it's meaning, then going from there.
There are some excellent books out there on heraldry and symbols. Sorry,
but I don't have any titles right at my fingertips, but I'll get back with
some. Check Amazon or your local library. Hope this helps - Dennis F.
