    Jill,
    This is going to sound cheesy, but have you seen those Chia pet things at the
    store? They are molded earthenware (I think) and have grooves all over. The
    chia seed (grass?) is soaked in water, then applied to the outside over the
    grooves. Then, apparently, all one has to do after that is keep water IN the
    chia pet (they are hollow), and the plants grow from there.

    I have NO idea if that would work but I don't see why it wouldn't. You could
    get alfalfa sprout seeds; they are tiny and the sprouts could be eaten on salads
    at lunch!
