    What I know!
Coats of arms were used to identify persons of note when everyone
    [practically], was illiterate.
Coats of arms were issued to people who were in or who joined the ranks of
    the nobility.
When two important families intermarried, the arms were placed on either side
    of the
    shield or flag or pennant.
As more families joined, the shields were quartered and more arms added.
Females on the left and male line on the right.
If the bearer of the arms was illegitimate but recognized, their arms were
under a 'bar sinister': a black line.
The different pictorial elements in arms have some interesting names, worth
    looking up.
