Another clay idea for 6th grade Egyptian studies.
Make a stele.
Materials:
Hieroglyphs and alphabet translation.
Egyptian art elements.
Pictures of Stele
Low fire clay.
Black or brown engobe or slip
Transparent glaze, Or black and brown boot polish.
Method.
1. Teach hieroglyphs, and have kids write the Egyptian hieroglyphs that
correspond to the alphabet, then have the kids write out the letters of their
names next to its corresponding hieroglyph. Also, show and explain typical
Egyptian PICS. for 'life' : Ankhs, Eye of Horus, Sunface with wings, etc.
Show typical decorative patterns.
Students make a sketch on paper of stele shape, and write their names with
hieroglyphs, plus a 'life' sign in stele's upper arch.
2. Hand out thick slabs of clay.
Shape into stele [tombstone shape]
Transfer drawing and incise the lines with clay tool.
Decorate edges with typical Egyptian patterns.
Allow to dry. Then fire.
3*. Rub surface with black or brown engobe or slip.
Clean off surface leaving color in lines only.
Cover with transparent glaze and fire again.
*This step can be done with boot polish
Rub in, rub off, and shine.
