Hello to everybody
and wishes for a happy, healthy and inspired New Year!
I'm compiling a list of myths about art and art education-- false beliefs
and negative stereotypes people have. For example, "Artists are irresponsible
and selfish," or "Only a gifted few can learn to draw," or "Art skills don't
have anything to do with academic skills."
Think of it as a list of UN-truisms about art.
Here's why I'm taking on this project:
I teach art at a charter school in Boston. My students are from many
different backgrounds and age between 10-15. I will be making presentation
about what I am teaching in art class. Our school is based on Asian culture
and learning standards. To spice up my presentation I plan to pass out snacks
to everyone before I start --fortune cookies (or cupcakes, whichever time
permits), each containing a myth/false stereotype about art or art education.
A little "food for thought" followed up some positive assertions about art
and art ed.
Please email an art myth if you can think of one! Myths with humor are
particularly delectable. I will email the list of UN-truisms to everyone once
it is made.
Eliza
