Im wondering if anyone has any ideas for a project to do with weight /
balance to do with a second grade class (25 kids)as an integration with
their classroom studies. I have already done paper sculpture (henri
rouseau pop-up jungles) so im trying to avoid paper stabiles, but maybe
something else? Any successful mobile projects, i know many times its
difficult for the 2nd and have heard some nightmares. I feel like id like
to try anyway...any tips? Or Twisteez? Or....?
Thanks for any help!

dear anna,
start out with a few chenille wires...make them twist them, connect them,
make springs around their fingers with the, etc. As they are working, hand
out wooden bases with hole(s) drilled in them. Then as they attach the
wires, hand out beads, styrofoam balls, chunks, etc. Just slowly add
interesting objects for them to attach, and half way through, tell them that
by the end of class, their "sculpture" must be BALANCED and stand on it's
own. I just did this and it was so interesting and fun to watch their
creations! Just hand out as much or as little as you feel is necessary to
keep them challenged without overwhelming. You might want to vary what to
hand out from table to table to get even more variety. Good luck. Oh, you
might want to have your hot glue gun going, if you want to change the bases
to little linoleum tile samples (I've got tons) or other larger bases.
