Lisa,
Two successful projects from last semester (for me) were:
* Wire & pantyhose sculpture: Drill 2 holes in a piece of wood for the
base. Untwist a wire coathanger and re-twist it into whatever shape you
like. Hot glue the two ends into the holes in the wood; hold until it
dries/cools. Stretch the toe part of a leg of pantyhose over the
hangar. Pull all the way under the base piece and it will hold there
(if not, I used a dab of hot glue - not too much or your base will
wobble). Use acrylic paint to paint these. Have students give their
piece a name and write a descriptive artists statement. A great display
piece and they were very interested, too.
* Papier mache' masks: Use the mask face forms from Sax/Nasco. Drape
with papier mache (or plaster or clay would work, too). Cut out eyes,
mouth, etc with xacto knife (I did that part... I'm not crazy enough to
put knives in 6th grade boys' hands). Paint and add "extras" like
raffia, wire, buttons, pipe cleaners, etc with hot glue. They LOVED
this... word got around to this semester's kids and they are already
asking for this project!
Good luck,
teri
