We just did mobiles again in class - but we have also combined a base with a
balanced figure... like the bird that sits on the end of your finger... the
physics is in the distribution of weight - you can make a simple example
with a piece of wire, two washers and a popsicle stick - challenge the kids
to balance the popsicle stick on their finger - and we all can find the
horizontal center of balance - but if you wrap the wire around the stick,
and leave some wire out like wings, bent down a little, bend ends into
hooks, place washers on - you can balance the stick on the end of your
finger, or manipulate the weights and you can balance on a curved end in a
vertical position...
you can transfer this to butterflies (poster board or tag) with pennies or
washers taped to the underside of a wing,
or you can make figures to balance on a wire (think of a tight rope walker)
-
it's magic -
