I am a parent volunteer, looking for some ideas for hands on projects
relating to specific artists. I am presenting Picasso to a third grade
class-the painting provided is "the Afficianado"-I have 1/2 hr to present,
and have biographical info and outline, but feel the kids would get more
if they could create relevant art of their own. Also I am presenting a
Monet "Water Lilies" print to a second grade class-same scenario applies.
Any ideas would be appreciated graetly. Thanks-KimmyJo
Dear KimmyJo,
Here is a third grade lesson plan called "Making Picasso Faces"
Materials:
11X18 paper
Markers
Crayons
Procedure: Begin by doing a whole session on getting to know Picasso.
Include reading stories about him & showing his works. Point out the colors
he used & his elementary approach to making faces.
Discuss how he would rearrange the faces to look interesting or silly! (Like
Mr. Potato Head on the Toy Story Movie.) Bring in a real Mr. Potato Head if
you can.
Suggest they think of different kind of faces they could make like a clown or
alien.
Give each child two pieces of drawing paper to make 2 very different kind of
faces. One face per page. One could be frontal and one profile. They need to
color them using markers and crayons. When these faces are complete they
receive a large
11 x 18 piece of paper. They need to cut out the pieces and parts of the two
different faces they created and glue them down on the big paper to create a
new face! They can mix and match and add details. Let them be silly.
This idea came from Ann Dingler of OH. I found it at this site (they have
lots of ideas on this site by many teachers)>>
