Last year, my adv. art class did a collaborative project using junk and/or
recycled materials. We used Plains tipis as a focus, and started by
studying these and inviting an expert in to put up a reproduction tipi
complete with robes, bags, backrests, etc. (We shared this with non-art
classes - it was really exciting seeing a 20' tipi in the commons area!)
Following this, students formed teams to reproduce the items needed for a
functional tipi out of recycled or discarded materials. Poles were made
from recycled pipe sections, a local industry donated the ends of some
rolls of reinforced plastic sheeting for the cover and liner, bags were
made from old luggage, beds from old blankets & packing "beans", and
remnants of old latex paint were combined with some acrylic to decorate the
cover and other items.
This was great fun, and you could pick any culture - N'Dbele houses? Yurts?
Iroquois longhouses? The students learned a lot about another culture's
housing & lifestyle, and had to be creative with materials.
