Jennifer,
Baby steps are exactly what you must take with this young student. You have
already succeeded in that your student has made a connection with art (has
decided to stay, has actually performed in class). If your expectations
remain in doing the work, explaining the work...FOCUSED on the work,
eventually this student will come around.
With students such as yours, it is often the case that everyone has focused
on the student as a problem...by focusing on the work, and not the student,
the student will begin to feel "safe." And the progress will improve rapidly
thereafter. Always praise every student for the accomplishment of even the
most basic skills, etc.
Best wishes,
Charlene
