Successful Painting Lesson!

Hi all! Just wanted to share a successful painting lesson that my advanced students just finished with. I walked in with alot of 1"x2" paper scraps that I had cut previously (size not important - I just got alot of scraps that way!) and 6 margarine tubs. I had each student write a proper noun (someone famous that everyone in class would know - comic book characters preferable) on a scrap of paper and put it in a bowl. Then we did the same with the following: adverb, adjective, verb, noun, and preposition. I shook up each bowl and each student drew a slip of paper from each bowl and put them together to form a sentence. We ended up with sentences such as "Popeye energetically rode above shadowy worms". The assignment was to then paint a picture that showed EACH of the words. They thought it was a piece of cake until I'd ask them how is Popeye riding energetically? How are these worms shadowy? It was alot of fun, the students spent alot of time critiquing each other's work, and offering suggestions. The thought processes the students exhibited were amazing! Not all of the paintings turned out, but some of them were great!
