I taught the same unit to my art 1 high school students with similar
results. Then I experimented with 8th graders giving them specific
criteria such as doing only portraits, using a very simple wall paper
background, and enlarging some of the images on a copy machine. That
was much more successful than the more open-ended pick your theme that I
did with the high school.
