 I also use Romare Bearden when doing collages. Perhaps you could allow them
 only to use magazine images for the "subject", the noun of the piece and
 everything else would have to be contrived by other media.

I agree with this. I would then have them hand paint the paper & tear or cut
these to use. That would slow them down a bit and make them think a little.
Also instead of taking actual things to represent themselves, they could use
something else in an entirely different way. By painting it out they would
see its real form. Good luck.
