Hi Everyone, I just began a unit on collage with my middle school kids,
using Romare Bearden as inspiration and examples. We discussed the subject
matter of his collages, which is basically experiences from his life. They
have started to create collages based on one experience in their life. I
told them to keep the picture focused, and not too busy, and to combine
magazine cut outs with colored paper, drawing, and paint. However, it
still seems like the kids get absorbed in the magazines, and cut out lots
of pictures, and the collages seem busy and not cohesive. How do you avoid
this with collage? Does any one have good ideas for expressing how to
create a more focused collage in middle school language?... Thanks,
chandra in Maine...remember that I am hauling everything from room to room,
so supplies and time are not at my fingertips.
