I'm not sure how far you want to stretch, but there is a great book
called Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes about a girl who gets sick
from the nuclear bomb on Hiroshima. It's not exactly nuclear WASTE, but
it might be an angle to explore. Just a thought...
