Re: sketchbooks and murals (HS)

I use weekly sketchbook assignments to feed my in-class projects.

For instance, "Look up three historical examples of pottery and sketch the
work showing surface detail/decoration. Label the time period and
culture," is an assignment for two weeks before starting ceramics. It
makes students find good and look at good examples and provides inspiration
for their own work.

Sometimes, I will assign creative explorations..."Draw a wacky trophy for
someone you know or for a famous person" or "Invent and draw a whimsical
teapot." After a few weeks , the students choose one of the assignments in
their sketchbook to create in clay.

I also do this for 2-D work before painting or printmaking units. I saves
time that used to be wasted in class "thinking of an idea," because if they
can't come up with anything better, I tell them to use the ideas in their
sketchbooks.
