Artist Alison Saar Named Keynote Speaker for NAEAís LA Convention
General Session IV, 9:00 am, Tuesday, April 4, 2000
RESTON, VA (January 3, 2000)óNAEA Convention Coordinator Barbara Laws
announced today that Alison Saar has been designated as a Keynote
Speaker
for
the NAEA Convention in LA for 2000.
Alison Saar was raised in Laural Canyon, California. She completed
her
BA/MFA in 1981 and began showing her work professionally immediately
after
graduation. She has collaborated with her mother, well known artist
Betye
Saar, on works containing similar themes such as the incorporation
religion,
the utilization of found materials as well as a sense of feminist
beliefs.
Aside from these similarities, the work of Alison Saar radically
departs
from
that of her mother.
Saar's figures and installations combine a personal form of visual
storytelling with an insightful, but oftentimes critical commentary on
the
anxieties and social incongruities of a modern age. In her
presentation of
materials and subject matter, Saar draws inspiration from contemporary
urban
life, as well as from Africa, Haitian, Creole, Celtic, native and
African-American myth, magic, and ritual. She blends the traditions
of folk
art and assemblage by salvaging used materials from everyday life
that,
according to Saar, bring their own history and wisdom to her work.
