I had some success last semester with sketchbooks. I gave them a list of 10
things to draw. Some of them I got off the list, such as draw Rodin's "The
Thinker" as an animal. Other ideas included drawing what they saw from their
bathroom doorway (facing the bathroom!), a self-portrait wearing period
clothing (such as Renaissance - include the picture you looked at while
drawing), cutting out two pictures from a magazine and finishing the
picture. Some of the drawings allowed for creativity, while others focused
on drawing from observation. I made them worth 100 points each, which was
almost 50% of their grade. I gave them 3 weeks to do the first three
drawings, then had them turn them in to be graded. I graded tough, and
included their current grade with the sketchbook assignments included in.
That seemed to wake up the majority of my students. The other 7 drawings
were due two days before finals. I was really surprised at the work the
majority of the kids put into their drawings. I'm hoping that by letting
them know how important I think sketchbooks are by grading them so hard that
the kids will put forth the same effort this nine weeks. After 5 years of
sloppy drawings I was willing to try anything!
